  • Funds and administers the Yukon Mining Incentives Program
  • Provides claim maps
  • Provides information on Yukon's mineral potential and mining investment opportunities.
  • Assists mining companies through the regulatory process by providing advice on contacts, processes and timing requirements.
  • Provides funding to the Mining and Petroleum Environment Research Group.

Below are some key references and resources for explorationists but also check out our links page:

Aerial Photos
Aerial photos are available for the entire Yukon for viewing at the Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources Library. The Library has over 100 000 photos (from the 1940s to the present), varying from 1:10 000 to 1:40 000 scales. Skyline Air Photo Viewer is a program designed to assist you in finding the air photos you need. This cheat-sheet provides basic instructions to help you use Skyline. The National Air Photo Library in Ottawa can also assist you with identifying Yukon aerial photographs. Official print copies of aerial photographs are available from the National Air Photo Library in Ottawa.

Anvil Range Exploration Records
The Yukon Geological Survey took possession of all Yukon exploration records of Anvil Range Mining Corporation and all its predecessor companies in 2005. This includes field notebooks, as well as sample location maps and assay results from all rock and soil geochemical samples from their regional exploration programs. These files can be accessed through the Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources Library. Also a manual describing the data set can be downloaded here (1.3 MB).

Mineral Assessment Reports
Mineral assessment reports are technical reports that document representation (exploration) work conducted on quartz or placer claims. Details on requirements for representation work can be obtained from the Yukon Quartz (Sections 53 and 54) and Placer (Sections 40 and 51) Mining Acts (and the Schedule of Representation Work). Reports submitted to the Mining Recorders for assessment credit remain confidential for a period of five years or six months after the expiry of the claims, whichever period is shorter.

Most assessment reports have been scanned and most non-confidential reports are now available in portable document format (pdf) from the Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources Library website. Microfiche and paper copies of non-confidential reports may be viewed at the Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources Library located on the 3rd floor, 300 Main Street in Whitehorse. In addition, a microfiche reader-printer is located in the library where paper copies of microfiche can be made by the client (subject to printing limits). Arrangements (using Whitehorse copying companies) for full paper copies may also be initiated by contacting the Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources Library (867-667-3111). Microfiche copies of non-confidential assessment reports can be obtained by submitting a list of reports to the appropriate District Mining Recorder (Whitehorse, Watson Lake, Dawson, Mayo) in which the report was filed or to the Staff Geologist, Yukon Geological Survey. Approved lists will be forwarded to:
Deines Microfilming Service
11725-105 Avenue
Edmonton, Alberta T5H 0L9
Phone: (780) 451-6500
Fax: (780) 451-3456

Deines will deal directly with the client for delivery and charges for microfiche copies. The cost to provide copies of the microfiche is $0.45 per fiche, with a minimum $25.00 charge (plus shipping and taxes, prices subject to change).

Claim Maps
Paper claim maps displaying claim locations and claim numbers are available at 1:30 000 scale from the Mining Recorders offices throughout the Yukon and are designated according to the NTS 1:50 000 grid number.  They can be purchased though the Whitehorse Mining Recorder, Room 102-300 Main Street, Elijah Smith Building, Whitehorse, Yukon.  Mailing Address: Box 2703 Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada Y1A 2C6, Phone: (867) 667-5200  Fax: (867) 667-5150  Email. Digital versions of the claim maps can be downloaded from the Mining Recorders website.

Geology Maps
Geology maps are available for most of the Yukon at 1:250 000 scale and are published and sold by the Geological Survey of Canada.  More detailed maps, typically at 1:50 000 scale are published by the Yukon Geological Survey and available for sale through Geoscience Information and Sales c/o Whitehorse Mining Recorder Energy, Mines and Resources, Government of Yukon. Check out the Publication List for available maps. These maps are also available for viewing at the Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources Library website.

Digital Geology of the Yukon is available on a Open File 1999-1.  A 1:1 000 000 geology map of the Yukon is available as Open File 2001-1.  For information about sales, contact:

Geophysics
Most of the Yukon is covered by ~1 km line spacing airborne magnetic surveys and 10 km grid gravity data, with local 0.5km spacing airborne gamma ray/magnetic surveys.   Surveys were undertaken by the Geological Survey of Canada.  Hard copy maps and digital data are available through their Geophysical Data Centre in Ottawa.  Hard copy maps of the gamma ray/magnetics surveys are available in Whitehorse at Geoscience Information and Sales, c/o the Whitehorse Mining Recorder, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Room 102, Elijah Smith Building, Whitehorse, Yukon.  Mailing Address: Box 2703 Whitehorse , Yukon Y1A 2C6 Phone (867) 667-3190 Fax (867) 667-5150,  E-mail.  More specific information on gamma rays and surveys is available from the GSC's NatGam website. These maps are also available for viewing at the Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources Library website.

Regional Silt Geochemistry
Regional stream silt geochemical surveys, data and maps are available from the Geological Survey of Canada.  Their National Geochemical Reconnaissance Program is part of the Mineral Resource Division in Ottawa.  Open file maps and data, as well as customized digital geochemical data sets can be obtained.  Hard copy maps and data for 1:250 000 NTS map sheets are also available in Whitehorse at  Geoscience Information and Sales, c/o the Whitehorse Mining Recorder, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Room 102, Elijah Smith Building, Whitehorse, Yukon.

Topographic Maps
Topo maps of Yukon are available at 1:250 000 and 1:50 000 scales as paper copies from the Centre for Topographic Information (formerly the Canada Map Office) in Ottawa, and Mac's Fireweed Bookstore in Whitehorse.  These maps are also available for viewing at the Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources Library website.
Maps areas are divisible according to National Topographic Survey (NTS) grids and identified by an alphanumeric such as 105D/11.  The first number represents the 1:1 000 000 map area, which is divisible into 16 1:250 000-scale map sheets represented by a letter (A-P).  The 16 1:50 000-scale map sheets within each of those sheets are designated by a number after a diagonal slash. Digital topographic maps are also available through the CTI.
